‘Celebrate Reason’: New Atheist Billboard Calls Christmas a Myth‏

We read:
"A group called the American Atheists has paid for a huge billboard on Route 495 outside the Lincoln Tunnel in North Bergen, N.J., that is raising some eyebrows.

The billboard shows a silhouette of the Three Wise Men approaching the Nativity, with the words: “You KNOW it’s a Myth / This Season, Celebrate REASON!”

The group says the billboard is not designed to convert Christians to atheism. Rather, Dave Silverman, a spokesman for the American Atheists, says the sign is designed to encourage existing atheists who are going through the motions of celebrating Christmas to stop.

These guys are of course entitled to state their beliefs but one wonders why they bother. I think they just want to upset Christians. They are probably just hate-filled Leftists.

I am as thoroughgoing an atheist as you will ever meet but I don't shove it down anybody's neck. I treat people who have the gift of Christian faith with respect. Is that too old-fashioned?

I usually go to church on Christmas day, as a matter of fact. I see it as a great day to celebrate the faith that has been instrumental in bringing our great modern Western civilization into being. But I am not an embittered Leftist.

Anonymous 1:00 AM - Hmmm...must've missed the part where anyone got their "ass in an uproar." I'd suggest getting back on your medication before the hallucinations get worse.

And I agree with John J, who espouses the same philosophy as Ravi Zacharias: "If you offer a starving man food from your table, you shouldn't choke him with it if he refuses to eat what you have to offer."

Myth:

"a usually traditional story of ostensibly historical events that serves to unfold part of the world view of a people or explain a practice, belief, or natural phenomenon" m-w.com

"a traditional story accepted as history; serves to explain the world view of a people" WordNet

Christmas definitely falls into that definition. But the problem is that this Atheist campaign is playing on misdirection and misinformation. Most people don't know the dictionary definition of "myth"--they assume that "myth = false".

This is nothing more than another example of a Liberal organization using deception to make a point instead of relying on truth.

What a bunch of scooges and grinches these self-centred atheists idiots are they just proof their nit-wits and the one real myth is this rediclous theory of evolution

I wonder how long it would take the ACLU to sue me if i put up a public sign defaming atheism? Ten, perhaps fifteen minutes?

In spite of what they claim, atheists are a dying cult, and in desperate need of attention. Remember the old show-biz term, "any publicity is good, even bad publicty"? That is what's going on here. The overwhelming majority of people in this country "choose" to have God in their lives in one way or another. It is this fact that atheists fear and work hard to change.

Muslims are rejoicing.

I wish I had the cash to put a huge sign in that spot that had a picture of:

*Allah
*Mohammed
*Osama bin Laden

AND SAYING:

“You KNOW Islam's a Myth / This Season, Celebrate CHANUKAH!...SHALOM BUBBIE”

Betcha that'd get a few burqas in a twist!

Anyone who doesn't know the historical/mythical/pagan background to the "Christmas" festival is extremely dumb or lives in a cultural/educational backwater - like most of the USA!

How about a billboard that says WHOS TO BLAME FOR RACSISM,THE HOLICAST? BLAME DARWIN,or THE ACLU ATHESIST,COMMUNSISTS & LAWYERS,UNDERGOUND

Christians and members of other religions have tried for centuries to force others to convert to their choice of beliefs. Atheists mostly just do not want the nonsense of religion forced upon them.
A great deal of misery and suffering has been the result of religious bigotry over centuries.
The Islamist extremists of today are much like the Christian extremists of the Spanish Inquisition and the Holy Crusades.

Racism was rampant long before Darwin was born. The evil of slavery has existed for at least three or four thousand years. In recent times, the slave trade was conducted mostly by Arabs and devout Christians. The slave holders in the Americas were generally devout Christians.

how do atheists know that God doesn't exist? They seem to believe that aliens do, without any proof whatsoever except theory.

Darwin "justified" racism for the Nazis and other ignorant people. There is only ONE human race, not multiple therefore racism cannot exist.

There is only ONE human race, not multiple therefore racism cannot exist.

That is a good point, but very vicious discrimination does exist on many bases.

There is not any proof that God exists, but if it gives comfort to believers to think that some diety, supreme being, cares about the activities of punty humans, that is their privilege; it does not give them a right to push it onto others.

punty humans, that
the word is puny, not punty.

It seems likely that life may have arisen on other distant planets as it did on earth.

No one has the right to push their religious beliefs onto anyone else. Nor does anyone have the right to try and push me away from my beliefs, as atheists do.

Anyone who isn't an uneducated moron knows that the so-called Christmas season is just an accretion of myriad myths and traditions from numerous sources, and is now more about commercialism, partying and over-indulgence than any kind of religious observance.

12:37: Well, aren't you just fvcking special.

Why the animosity. If you are not happy just ignore it. What's next, don't like that building you drive past everyday? Just call and say that your religion finds it offensive and chances are it will be demolished, providing you are not Christian.

Is it because atheists don't have their own major holiday? Why not hitch a ride on somebody else's and enjoy the goodwill?

I am very much an atheist but don't see any gain in ruining any religious holiday. In fact it does no harm to enjoy their happiness.

Did some body take away your present when you were young because you did't believe in Santa?

I may not believe in God but I believe in the joy of giving.

1:49 You ought to know that the Christian Church hijacked the mid-winter festival and called it "Christmas", not the other way around. But now it's just turning back into a carnal festival once more, where you can hardly distinguish Santa Claus from a god figure.

Anonymous said...

5:00 So what! What difference does it make if for whatever reason people get together and celibrate.
Britain is finally giving recognition to Druids who are the centre of the winter festival you allude to.
It would be a far better world if we just celebrated each others holidays in a spirit on enjoyment rather than trying tear down everything you don't believe in. We have far to much of that BS in the political world externally without self destructing internally for the same reasons.
I am not saying love thy neighbour but do unto him what you would have done to you.

Jesus is dead. Get over it.

Thats becuase annon the orgional md-winter festivals were based on false gods

Anonymous said...

All "gods" are false - just reflections of humanity's insecurity and ignorance.
The mid-winter festival was merely acknowledging the Sun's rise again (Christ's birth?) from its lowest point in the sky (ie. darkness, and winter's death).
Much religion is ultimately based on early agricultural societies' dependence on the sun-related seasons.

Yes like the "resurrection" of plant and animal life in the Spring - no connection with the resurrection of Jesus at Easter? - YEAH RITE!

Anonymous said...

Some sort of "cross" may have been an execution devise in Roman Judea, but it was also a "pagan" symbol for the four seasons and the four cardinal points. The Celtic Christian cross even shows the sun-symbol behind it also regarded as the circle of life.
As also said above, all these are symbols from early agricultural societies (as were the Hebrew tribes of the Bible).
