GA: Lawmakers to review “so help me God” police oath

We read:
"City council members in Marietta, Ga., will consider changing the oath of office that the city’s police officers take so that recruits can swear to uphold the law without saying the phrase ’so help me God.’ But a police spokeswoman says that to her knowledge, nobody has ever objected to saying those words, and the city’s mayor promises he’ll veto any change to the oath that removes them.

Det. Gwen Lewis, a police spokeswoman, said no complaints have been received recently regarding the five-sentence oath the Marietta Police Department last adopted in August 2001. To her knowledge, she said, no would-be officer has ever objected to saying ’so help me God’ as part of the oath.” (11/23/09)

"The idea is being pushed by Councilman Van Pearlberg"

Ever notice how there's always a jew behind efforts to remove religion and God from our society? I wonder why that is.

@anonymous: Your bigotry just bleeds through. Most Jews are just as reverent to God as most Christians, so don't single them out for sake of a few vocal people. The real problem is the prevailing Leftist mindset that has irreverently twisted the first Amendment to mean separation of church and state--something it was never intended to be.

---You ever heard the song "God Bless America"? A jew wrote that song, so Councilman Perlberg's actions mean nothing.

But could someone later deny the oath he/she took was valid because they didn't believe in any god - ? It certainly seems a bit dumb for an atheist or non-believer to say such words.

Deny the oath? For what? If they don't want to be a cop anymore they can just quit. Do you really think "denying the oath" would absolve them of their responsibilities? Would the same apply to an atheist who said "so help me God" in a courtroom and then committed perjury? Maybe all they really have to do is cross their fingers when they say it - or simply say "just kidding!"

In a courtroom, someone being sworn in can say "i attest" to the oath, rather than saying "so help me God". It's still legal and binding.

As a non-religious person I consider stating something like "so help me God" to be an insult to religious people. Even worse is attending certain ceremonies during church services.
For those reasons I won't do those things, not because I don't want anyone to do it but precisely because I don't want to offend religious people by watering down their rites and beliefs into just mindless motions and statements.

As such I won't support changing oaths to remove the line "so help me god" but will support efforts to provide alternative versions for those not wishing to use that phrase.

Of course that means providing choice, something leftwingers are vehemently opposed to.

I gotta admit - I've yet to meet the person who can divine a person's religion solely from their last name. I've met lots of -bergs who aren't Jewish and some who are. My favourite one for this discussion would be a Catholic Priest - Fr. Roseberg.

Because some Jew wrote a song years ago, a Jew today can't be acting like a douche?

This has got to be the dumbest comment in the history of this website.
