Cultural appropriation?
When whites adopt anything associated with minority cultures, it is condemned as "cultural appropriation". So should we condemn Mrs Obama for torturing her naturally nappy hair into the flowing locks at present popular among young white women such as the Duchess of Cambridge? If not, why not?

ReplyDeleteThe term "cultural appropriation" is a concept that denies the evolution of culture. A cultures naturally "blend" when in contact with each other with as cultures grow and evolve.
To be decrying "cultural appropriation" is to deny the natural course of a culture's growth and is a misguided attempt to force stagnation on a culture.
2:51 AM Just to clarify - are you okay with white people wearing Native American garb, adopting African American hair styles, wearing a serape and large brimmed hat, cooking and eating cuisine from other cultures etc.
ReplyDeleteOr do you only see it okay for people of other colors to adopt clothing and fashions normally associated with white people?
Just asking.
The Grusome twosome Jaffar and the evil queen Destro and the Barroness,
ReplyDeleteDean - I am perfectly ok with people wearing the "garb", eating the food etc of other cultures. It is after all an example of what I said and is a natural action of a culture in evolution. To deny people access to other cultures is an attempt to fossilize a culture.
ReplyDeleteIf cultural customs and artifacts, etc. aren't copied, imitated or emulated, then a more dominate culture will wipe them out completely, and nobody will know about them in the future except a few historians and anthropologists.
ReplyDeleteIf Michelle Obama wants non-frizzy flowing hair that's fine by me. I bet it took a lot of steaming to get it straight though.
ReplyDeleteI wonder how long it stays straight before it springs back into its natural afro?
It's double appropriation: she's got both a white woman's hair and broader shoulders than her man.
ReplyDeleteCan anyone else see an elongated Alfred E. Neuman resemblance in Obama's face?
ReplyDelete1:26 AM Right on. We think alike.
ReplyDeleteTwo zero's, end of story.
