Some VERY "incorrect" speech
This is much-quoted on the net but Snopes.com appears to have no mention of it so it seems to be authentic.
"T. B. Bechtel, a part-time City Councilman from Midland , TX , was asked on a local live radio talk show, just what he thought of the allegations of torture of the Iraqi prisoners. His reply prompted his ejection from the studio, but to thunderous applause from the audience.
HIS STATEMENT:
'If hooking up an Iraqi prisoner's nuts to a car's battery cables will save just one Texas GI's life, then I have just three things to say,'
'Red is positive,
Black is negative, and
Make sure his nuts are wet.

Well asked. If the person captured is known to have value according to rank or position or by knowing the individual's history (i.e. well known chemist, physicist) then the assumption can be made his knowledge is of value.
For example, if I capture a colonel I am well within the bounds of common sense to assume he possesses substantial knowledge even if I have no proof of this ante facto.
Essentially, anyone in a leadership position possesses valuable intelligence. Whether applying high voltage to loosen his toungue is appropriate is another matter entirely.

ReplyDelete----Well, I think when it comes to torture, there's a lot of stuff that's done before electrocution. First you might put your victim in front of a hot light and ask him the same group of questions again and again, then you might try to humiliate him, destroy him psychologically or offer him rewards for cooperating, then perhaps sleep deprivation, loud music, waterboarding, beatings, and if all that doesn't work, that's when you have to get creative.
When I heard of the methods used at Abu Ghraib, I thought that woman was brilliant. What better way to humiliate a macho muslim than putting a dog collar on him and dragging him, or getting a bunch of them naked and piled up?
Bush should have given her a pardon, people just don't understand the complexities of war.
However, that doesn't mean I support police officers beating up suspects to extract a confession. Too many people have admitted to crimes they didn't commit because of torture.
I believe that Torturing someone to get information is valid, but in accordance with the Constitution, since the person was forced to testify against themselves, any information that you get from the Torturing cannot be used against them.
ReplyDeleteThat said, I do wish that the person had used better words. Why say nuts, when you can say scrotum? And since we are dealing with the Scrotum, electricity is not needed, just spray them with Tear Gas. That causes lots of pain, with no lasting scars!!!

Mobius, what does interrogating an enemy combatant in a foreign country have to do with our constitution? Or perhaps, do you feel our constitution should apply to everyone, everywhere.
ReplyDeleteThere's a very old and very reliable standard that should be used when it becomes necessary to use torture when interrogating terrorists. If they're telling the truth, God will save them. If they're lying, He won't!
