At the University of Florida squelching conservative speech is routineSeveral weeks ago, UF's Young Americans for Freedom (YAF) chapter, of which I'm a member, created a “Build the Wall” banner to hang on campus. As a club, we had to get a permit from UF for the banner and our members spent a significant amount of time and money creating it. In a matter of hours, the banner was torn down and stolen by leftists. That evening, the club met to build a new one, only to have it stolen twice the next day.
Leftist students tear down conservative signs, posters, and flyers for speakers they disagree with. It shows a blatant disregard for our First Amendment rights and for the amount of resources our clubs put into activism.
In all, three police reports were filed, and an officer indicated one student could be charged with theft. Thanks to the efforts of our club members, our speech was protected, but at a hefty price. Guarding a banner for 12 hours a day and having cameras present shouldn’t be a requirement to ensuring speech is protected. In many cases, it’s not even feasible.

ReplyDeleteI find it astonishing that young people who wouldn't dream of stealing a book or a bag of candy don't think twice about stealing or destroying a sign that has a viewpoint they disagree with.

Anon 7:49 - What makes you think those who would steal a sign wouldn't also steal a book or a bag of candy?
ReplyDeleteI suspect the culprit(s) in this story would steal either just as long as they can justify it to themselves which honestly takes no work to do.
