Campus, civic groups condemn cartoon in UCLA newspaper seen as anti-Semitic

A cartoon seen as anti-Semitic that was published in the UCLA student newspaper has been strongly condemned by civic and campus organizations, among them a pro-Palestinian student group.

The cartoon published Monday in the Daily Bruin shows Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu standing in front of two stone tablets inscribed with the Ten Commandments. In the commandment “Thou Shalt Not Steal,” the word “not” has been crossed out in red.

Pointing to another commandment “Thou Shalt Not Kill,” labeled as the seventh by the cartoonist, Netanyahu shrugs his shoulders and says, “#7 is next.”

In the upper left corner of the cartoon, the legend reads: “Israel passes law legalizing seizing any Palestinian land.”

It refers to a law passed last week by the Israeli Knesset that allows the state to seize private Palestinian land on which settlements or outposts were built, as long as the settlers were not aware of the status of the land. In cases where the landowners are known, they are entitled to compensation.

The cartoonist, Felipe Bris Abejon, is an undergraduate student in political science who last year served as education and resources director of the UCLA chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine, or SJP, a strongly anti-Zionist and pro-Palestinian national student group.

In a letter to the Daily Bruin, the SJP board at the University of California, Los Angeles condemned the cartoon and said that Abejon is currently not an SPJ member.

BoP,

Birds of a feather perhaps?

After all, all you do is come onto this site and "whine, whine, whine" about other people doing what you consider to be "whining."

BoP,

Of course it is whining. All you do is complain about what other people say. You are no different than the people about whom you complain.

You disagree with people so you whine about what they say. You disagree with comments so you whine about others being "pinheads"

You whine about education on this country and then demonstrate a lack of spelling, (goverment buricrats,) grammar, punctuation, and critical thinking skills.

For example, on this topic concerning the anti-Israel cartoon, you won't find a "goverment buricrats" in this at all. In fact, you won't even find a government bureaucrat.

If you are basing your whine on "goverment buricrats," don't you think that you should at least show where the "goverment buricrats" are in this?

Don't you think that people should have the right to say "I don't like and disagree with that cartoon?" Or do you think that free speech means people have to accept whatever another person says? Do you think the idea of "free speech" should be to facilitate the exchange of ideas?

What am I saying?

I apologize for asking you to "think" when clearly that is a skill you do not possess.

Pretty poor cartoon. Totally socialist. Totally anti-sematic. Once again the media beating up on Israelis in order to support the non-functioning Palestinian government at any cost. How about the media go back to the first law of media and prove whet the want to publish before they publish. The Israeli's are faced with genocide once again from the Arab world and with the support of the UN. The Palestinians have been ruled by foreign governments until1956 when the British walked out of the Gaza strip. As to the occupied territories, Israel was forced to defend itself beyond what any comparative country has ever faced. The fact that the succeeded is a total credit to the them. As far as the occupied territories are concerned until Russia gives back the Crimea, China gives sovereignty to Tibet and Taiwan along with Hong Kong then I will agree to discuss the Palestinian issue. Until then all Palestinian actions are terrorism.

You do not have to read BoP's comments if you do not wish to.
What are you trying to do? Make BoP go away? Why?
If he is as lacking in thinking skills as you say he is, then why insult him about it?
Why not lay out some basic rules of logical thought?
It is true that lefties are forever complaining about what non-lefties say and how they say it, and are always whining about society and wanting to see it changed into some other society. And BofP points out that is what lefties do, and admittedly he points it out incessantly. All birds say the same thing incessantly. None have wide range of conversation. So leave poor BofP alone. Let him say his thing. It is certainly true what he says.

Is it possible to criticise Israel without being anti-Semitic?
If so, this is a reasonable example.
Israel's decision on settlements in disputed territory is worth a political cartoon - and this one seems to hit home.
However, IIRC thou shalt not steal is the 8th commandment, thou shalt not kill the 6th (the 7th being thou shalt not commit adultery).
